Since 2010 is Fred Opperdoes an emeritus professor. He is a former UCL head of the Laboratory of Biochemistry and the Research Unit for Tropical Diseases (TROP unit) of the ICP. He was also a member of the Directorate of the ICP, together with Thierry Boon and Emile Van Schaftingen.

Futhermore he was a member of the following Faculty committees:
