Princess Lilian Foundation Visiting Professorship 2016-2017 awarded to Prof. Daniel KAHNE

The Laboratory of Jean-Francois Collet (Institut de Duve - UCLouvain) proudly announces
that the Princess Lilian visiting professorship has been awarded to Prof. Daniel Kahne from Harvard Medical School.
The Princess Lilian Foundation has established a high profile visiting professorship
with the specific aim to foster interaction between researchers in Belgium and established experts.

 

Program in brief

In the week of April 18, 2017, Prof. Kahne will deliver in Brussels two public lectures on his research topic, including one at the opening ceremony and one at a mini-symposium, during which young scientists will also present their results. His lectures will focus on his research on the bacterial cell envelope.

In the remaining part of the week of April 18-21, Prof. Kahne will meet researchers (senior researchers, postdocs & PhD students) from Belgian universities working in the fields of microbiology, chemistry and pharmacology.

 

 

On April 18st, at 5pm, Dan Kahne will give his talk entitled From Penicillin to the PEZ™ Machine”.

For the past fifteen years, the Kahne Laboratory has been interested in understanding the biogenesis of the cell envelope of Gram-negative bacteria, which must be accomplished outside the cell in the absence of an obvious energy source. His research focuses on identifying and understanding the machinery necessary for proper assembly of this organellar membrane, in particular peptidoglycan biosynthesis and outer membrane assembly. Because the outer membrane creates an effective permeability barrier to most antibiotics, understanding how to interfere with its assembly could provide new targets for antibiotic discovery.
